Since 1985, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has taken a hard stance against littering.
With a primary focus on Texas’ 3,233 miles of roads, TxDOT’s “Don’t mess with Texas” campaign is the gold-standard and the most successful of its kind in the country.
Over the years, TxDOT has utilized robust messaging across multiple channels to engage Texans in the Don’t mess with Texas mission, including launching an interactive app. Christened the “Litterer,” this app allowed people to help report litterbugs across the state in an anonymous, easy-to-use manner.
TxDOT turned to the user experience professionals at EX Squared to reimagine the Litterer app, with a goal to improve the overall design and create a more appealing user interface, as an easy and fun way to help keep Texas roads clean.
Our UX design and development teams needed to update the TxDOT’s website and app, both to update the campaign’s overall image and to add a voice input capability so that users could interact with the app without touching their screen.
Because most app users will be reporting from the road, EX Squared provided users a way to use voice activation when they see someone littering.
The team also linked up several backend elements for Don’t mess with Texas, including connecting the app with multiple car and license plate databases, so reports could be as accurate as possible.
This project is a good example of how we can help redesign an app and website from the ground up to meet user and client needs while improving overall UX capabilities for our client.
